In July 2019 over 50 alumni came back to campus to connect with 72 incoming first-year students in Yale Summer Session’s First-year Scholars at Yale. Now in our fourth year, our program, “Navigating Yale & Beyond: Alumni Perspectives” attracted alumni from California, Texas, North Carolina, Washington, D.C., and throughout the Northeast, and from a variety of professional backgrounds. Four alumni panelists discussed what they would have done differently during their time at Yale – and why – as well as what their lives after Yale have been like. At an afternoon reception, all alumni were able to share their experiences as first-generation low-income students and connect with Yale’s newest class to be an ongoing resource for career and life skills development. Alumni were inspired by the energy, ambition, and resourcefulness of the incoming students, who were in turn excited – and reassured – to learn how others before them had overcome similar struggles and to get broader perspectives on academic and career choices.
