Our first picnic for first-gen students brought them together with their alumni family for an afternoon of fun, food, and beautiful fall weather. Over 200 members of our Yale family dropped in — about 40+ alumni, 25+ families, along with faculty, staff, and many friends — to provide a sense of community and belonging for the 85+ students whose own families could not attend the annual Yale Family Weekend. Some first-gen students and their families also joined us, and parents appreciated meeting alumni as well. Leading our team was Suzanne Solensky ’83, who partnered with Jorge Anaya ’19, Woodbridge Fellow (YCDO & Poorvu Center) and coordinator of The Community Initiative, and Burgwell Howard, senior associate dean of Yale College and associate vice president of student life.
