At our second annual Family Weekend Picnic, more than a dozen alumni returned to the Yale campus to spend an afternoon with Yale’s first-gen low-income students. Launched in 2019 (with a hiatus caused by the pandemic), the event is designed especially for students whose families are not able to attend the Yale Family Weekend, but first-gen students whose families were present were also invited. Alums enjoyed being with the students and family members, showing them that we all belong to the Yale community.
The event was co-led by Yale’s Community Initiative team, including Jorge Anaya ‘19, the FGLI Ambassadors, and Dean Burgie Howard, who did the on-campus planning and provided delicious catered food for everyone. Timeica E. Bethel-Macaire ‘11, director of the Afro-American Cultural Center, offered us a wonderful indoor space.
